Fight the Frump -Long Live the Capri
Over at my second home, we twittered about how capri pants can never go out of style. Seriously, I do not care what the magazines say. To get capris out of my closet ~insert Charlton Heston's dramatic voice~ you'll have to pry them out of my cold dead hands.
Let's be honest, sometimes shorts just aren't the best choice. I won't even mention that thing cellulite that none of us have on our hips arms thighs. At a certain point many Mommies just needs to give up the dream of wearing her rhinestone Juicy emblazoned shorts. Sidenote -If you are one of the lucky Friends of Fussy who rawks some supa-fab gams, then more power to ya!
I love capris because-
I am known for my pasty exotic Irish heritage. I have been known to cause traffic accidents from snow blindness cause by my legs without self tanner.
I am over 12. I have way too many curves. Bermuda shorts are back in the stores. ~fussy shakes her head~ I wasn't born yesterday. No woman over a size 1 can wear these.
Sometimes ladies wear shorts that give the appearance that their bottom is eating their shorts. Nom, Nom, Nom.... Not a good look.
Pick quality capris. Fabric that is too thin will show every tiny bump on the backs of our legs -not that we have any! Stay away from white! Only buy wrinkle free. Seriously, we don't iron right? Oh, you do iron? ~fussy shamefully slinks away~
I found these great capris at Gap & LL Bean.
Casual & cute, eh?
Remember the Fussy mantra- "Keep the below the waist shades dark. Wear colors on top to draw the eyes up and away from our lovely bottom halves!"
Not all capris are fashionable. No Fashionable Friend of Fussy shall wear bright floral printed pants. If I hear any reports of this travesty among my ranks it will not be tolerated. Do not test me, after I have this baby I will come take those ugly hot pink hiawaiian print pants out of your closet. You can't hide them!
Here are two final examples of capris gone hilariously wrong. Enjoy.
I'm sorry. I just had to do it!

I always thought capri pants had to be much shorter to be considered capri pants. Like, mid-calf length. Those are much more flattering!

You are so funny!
I'm the same way about my capris! But, I confess . . . I have three white pair! I'll do better, I promise!

I love the length of these capris -- they are super flattering! And, I am all about wrinkle-free. I'm not even sure we have an iron anymore.

Once again, you have started my day with laughing to tears. I love your pictures and yes, I am addicted to capri's too since they cover so much but are high enough to get you out of flood waters in a pinch - just in the rare case you are caught in downpour. Can't forget that one! Gotta love versatility.

all the capris morph mizfit into STUMPY.
Posted by: MizFit | April 25, 2008 at 05:24 AM
I am all about the Capri's too!
Hides alot....one being my milk white legs!

I too have to be careful of capris. Sometime capris and 5'1" does not work. On the other hand I would rather be short than to let everyone see all my hail damage going on back there. :)
On another note:
I cant believe men used to wear those things!!!
Posted by: Valarie in AL | April 25, 2008 at 07:21 AM
Capris?
Not so much for me ... I am 5'4" and I look like I am just wearing pants bought in the petite section ... or that I am waiting for a flood.
Personally, I think they look best on 5'7" and taller ....all leg.
Posted by: Nancy | April 25, 2008 at 07:29 AM
I never even thought of the petite issue. ~blushes~ Sorry about that.
I always wanted to be tiny petite flower of a girl.
How'd I turn out?
Um, not so much.
Valarie- Hail damage. Bwahahaha
Posted by: Mrs. Fussypants | April 25, 2008 at 07:36 AM
I agree with Valerie-I'm 5'2", and most of the times pants sold as capris simply mean I get pants that I don't have to hem for once :) Every once in a great while I'll find one that actually hits me mid calf.
And I too admit to having a white pair-it just seems so summery.

I think it is just too funny that one comment to Bloggess has sent so many people on Capri tirades~ love it! Love my capris, I think I own a pair in every shade. Excellent point on the fabric- one smart girl you are.
I love me some bermuda shorts too tho! Tell me it isn't true Fussy?? Bermudas can look great on girls with curves, just got to make sure they fit right and don't ride up anywhere.
Trust me- Ann Taylor makes some great Bermudas, I promise...
And ironing is evil and should be abolished...

Just the hilarity I needed this morning to get me going! Love the capris gone wrong. And, um, no, we don't usually iron Fussy. 'Mon, you should know us better! Happy Friday!
Posted by: themommykelly | April 25, 2008 at 07:51 AM
Hee hee. Capri pants ARE my summer go-to, although they do make me look seriously stumpy. I should just wear six inch heels all the time for that leggy look.
Posted by: Beck | April 25, 2008 at 07:54 AM
I love capris-even if Tim Gunn hates them- they will still be in my closet! And I think white is ok as long as they fit and are lined. I'm glad you are feeling better!
Posted by: Joy | April 25, 2008 at 08:08 AM
I love me some Capris! After 2 babies, shorts just don't look or feel right, this is the perfect solution.
But, even though you might want to ladies, do not wear the ones with elastic waist bands and pleats, just don't do it (unless you are Fussy and have a reason in your belly to do that).

When I heard that on twitter the other day, I gasped and sputtered and made other objectionable noises. No one is taking my capris away from me. My days of wearing shorts outside the house are O. V. E. R.
Capris are all I have left.
Posted by: Sleeping Mommy | April 25, 2008 at 08:17 AM
Thank you! I will never give up my capris either and now I know I'm not alone. Twitter scared me yesterday with all that capris-out-of-style" talk. I had to walk away from my computer for while cause I was so horrified ;)
Posted by: catnip | April 25, 2008 at 08:34 AM
capri pants should not be worn by short women.
i'm sorry. 5'2 and under? maybe even 5'3? NO WAY. NOT flattering.
(although i do have two pairs that i have cerified wearable. but ONLY with heels. and only after they have been tailored correctly)
Posted by: ali | April 25, 2008 at 08:40 AM
Good one Fussy! I would add to watch capri length and the match with your shoes/heel height. Capris can cut you off in a weird place, making legs look shorter and stubbier (and the person walking around on those legs heavier). Which is never ever sexy. And we must all be sexy.
Posted by: Amy @ Milk Breath & Margaritas | April 25, 2008 at 08:41 AM
I agree with the other "petite" commenters, capri length pants tend to make my legs look shorter than they already are! I'm 5'3" and a bit curvy, and I love my bermudas! Although, I have to say, the most flattering thing for any woman to wear is a summery A-line skirt. Flattering and so cool in hot summer months.
Posted by: Kristin | April 25, 2008 at 08:50 AM
Awesome. I've been told the only whiter than my skin is the glory of God - we share the same heritage. I have a soft spot in my heart for that abominable snow man.
Bottom-eating shorts, OMG I'm dying!
And any man that flaunts around in capris and a hat has clearly had too much to drink. Bartender, cut that man off!
Posted by: jenn | April 25, 2008 at 08:57 AM
I absolutely, positively love my capris and wear nothing else all summer (thankfully, I have a few pairs and am not wearing the same ones over and over!). I only wear shorts. . .well, never. And, my legs are not bad looking, but once you hit 40, they just don't look the same.

I lurves me some capris. Thanks for the tips!
Posted by: Darla | April 25, 2008 at 09:22 AM
I like capris too. Only I always feel the need to wear sandals with them. Any other suggestions for footwear?
Posted by: Denitra's Den | April 25, 2008 at 09:29 AM
Fun blog - just found you through a link from JudiLynn's blog.
I can't do capris because my legs are short and capris cutting my calf in half makes them look shorter.
I like shorts better, but 4 kids in 8 years has done a number to the veins on my left leg, so until I get those sucked out, it's pants for me. LOL
Posted by: Carrie Lauth | April 25, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Tim Gunn will just have to keep his no capri rule.......
Posted by: Jackie | April 25, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Nom, nom, nom... Oh Fussy! I just snorted my milk!!
What's the difference between capris and crop pants?
Posted by: Heather | April 25, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Fussy, we were cut out of the same (wrinkle free) fabric. Not only do I never iron (I have religious convictions against it) but I share all of your other feelings on this issue!
Posted by: nancypants | April 25, 2008 at 01:14 PM
I'm all about the wide-leg capri. Why's that? Oh yeah, because I'm 5'2", so I wear them as pants and don't have to needle my MIL to hem them for me. And we'll say the pun was semi-intended.
Posted by: heather | April 25, 2008 at 01:17 PM
Oh I love me some Capri's.... I don't care that they make me look shorter than I am, I find them much more comfortable than jeans.
And yeah, no on the short shorts or "yo-yo queen" tight pants.
Posted by: mimipz5wjj | April 25, 2008 at 02:15 PM
I, too, have a torrid love affair with capris and will never give them up.
Although my 7 year old son tried wearing his 5 year old brother's pants to school the other day as shorts. He came across more as capris. NO MAN SHALL WEAR CAPRIS is so, so right.
Posted by: Karen | April 25, 2008 at 04:17 PM
That picture of the guy wearing "capris" is hysterical.
I avoided capris for a long time because I saw so many unflattering examples.
Those are some nice options. Although, those models don't look much different than the one in the Bermuda shorts.
Posted by: JunglesWife | April 25, 2008 at 04:38 PM
I'm 5'1" and love my capris, but have heard they make me look short! Looks like I'm not the only one. So tell us, what is the appropriate length for us shorties?
Posted by: Jane | April 25, 2008 at 06:37 PM
Sorry for leaving two links. I goofed it the first time. *Blush*

I am a HUGE capri fan and just stocked up on some adorable colors at J.Crew and the Gap. Jackie O wore capris all the time and the pictures of her are classic. Some things never go out of style...despite what they say in Lucky Magazine.
Posted by: jill | April 25, 2008 at 08:07 PM
I too love my capris (my exotic Scots-Irish legs can be used as highbeams if the car battery dies), but I have to say that I do love my bermudas too. Mine come just below the knee (my shin and ankles are still holding their own but my knees gave up long ago.) Sometimes it's just too hot to wear capris. Now let's see what you suggest for sausage arms.
Posted by: Francie | April 25, 2008 at 08:13 PM
I have a favorite pair of blue capri's. I can't wait for it to be warm enough to wear them again.
Posted by: Ava | April 25, 2008 at 08:52 PM
I thought I was being all non-FRUMP by getting rid of all my capris this season?
Not that shorts are an alternative.
Guess I'll just sweat!

My lovely Fussy. Us 'apple' shaped gals need to flip your advice. Dark colours on top, v neck and colour on the bottom half. Us apple chicks have thick waists and broad shoulders that should NOT be emphasized, but lucky enough to have purdy ankles...
Long live the Capri!

I love the hottie in his white capris! Gonna have to get my husband some of those.
Ooh, baby!
Thx for the laughs, Fussy. Hope you're feeling better.

I loathe capris. Really, how can one not embrace the power of the short shorts?
Heh.
I kid. Don't go into false labour or anything.
I like capris. But I prefer knee length skirts. I love me a pretty skirt. That is what you will mainly find me flouncing about in once the endless snow finally melts.

Hello -
I love your blog! I found it from reading Darla's site, and I think I'm hooked.
Love capri's too. Don't have enough of them, my mom has 35 pair! But she goes for the wild florals - she's also pretty tall too and can carry it off.
I love blue jean capris. And khaki ones. Have to admit that I have a pair of coral flowery ones. You can't have 'em though. Hee!
Posted by: Folkwoman | April 26, 2008 at 04:50 PM
I love capris but am taking "What Not to Wear" advice for shorties and trying the just at or below the knee length, which I guess is Bermuda. I like these Dockers for my curvy figure. http://www.dockersstore.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2931643&cp=2271558.2293646&parentPage=family

I love capris!! But I would make sure that the wrinkle free treatment applied to the fabric is not from teflon. Most finishes these days are and I do not feel safe wearing a chemical on my clothes that has many health risks. Even though most of those risks come when teflon is heated, I wonder about the fumes that come from the dryer that little ones are breathing in. Or when a baby drools/sucks on a chemically treated shirt.
I think looking a bit wrinkled is worth the peace of mind of not exposing myself and my children to a questionable chemical.

I love capris. I've not worn shorts in many years.
Posted by: Ashley Ladd | April 26, 2008 at 10:51 PM
*LAUGH* I couldn't agree more even though I look like the "No way she's hit puberty" girl. If you're note in perfectly trimmed firmness, put.down.the.shorts.
I loved those GAP capris, though I must say your second pair look as if they're having a crotch issue.
You should come by my blog and check out my handmade beady flip flops with matching earrings! Play my scavenger hunt and win them for yourself! They even match your blog *smile*

Capris also cover up 2 day old razor stubble better then shorts...or so I have heard.
